Flattering Hairstyles for Round Faces

There are several hairstyles for round faces that create flattering lines and angles that trim off the extra curves at the cheeks and create a slimmer shape. Round faces are fairly common. In fact, many celebrities have them – Mila Kunis, Olivia Munn, Charlize Theron, Queen Latifah, Kirsten Dunst – but you would not notice so readily because of the way their hair is cut and styled.

Hairstyles for Round Faces

Managing a round face is quite easy, provided you consider how the hair frames the face and creates the illusion of a trimmer, more angled face. Here are some hairstyles to try:

Long and Mixed – Length

Long hair is often the go-to hairstyle for people with round faces because the strands can be used to hide the fuller sides of the face. The mixed length also creates a gradual angling that flatters the shape. Avoid one-length haircuts because these create a box-like frame around the face, exaggerating its round shape.

To create the look, trim the hair at the sides at chin length and cut the hair at longer lengths as you go to the back. Hair can be brushed and some styling mousse or gel applied to create body. For more drama, create waves by weaving sections of hair around large curlers and allowing the hair to fall back in place.

Long and Straight

Mila Kunis and Penelope Cruz exemplify the ideal long and straight haircut that works for round faces. Long hair lengthens the face while straight locks frame the face nicely. Less body at the cheek area also creates a slimmer face. Think of straight hair as curtains that hide the round shape of the cheeks. If the client prefers to part the hair at the center, cut the hair past the shoulders and allow layering at the jawline. This creates very subtle angles that work perfectly well with a round face.

Shaggy Cut

For someone who prefers to wear bangs, a shaggy cut works well. Keep hair at shoulder length and the bangs just slightly above the eyes. Cut the bangs so they skim over the cheekbones at a slightly longer length.

The Pixie

Short hair can make a round face appear fuller but the right pixie cut can still frame a pretty face. The trick is not to cut too much at the ear area and to add some piecey bangs in front. With the Pixie, your best tools are your fingers, so style with bare hands to prevent hair from going flat.

The Bangs

The right fringe will frame the face and create a more flattering shape. If the hair is long or shoulder-length, create long, side-swept bangs. Bangs should be cut at the cheekbones and swept to the sides for a dramatic flair.
