How Barbering Students are Becoming Their Own Bosses

cosmetology program

Does the idea of becoming a barber appeal to you? Barbers use shears, scissors, razors and clippers to cut men’s and women’s hair. There are a number of advantages to entering this profession. One of the things we frequently hear from our students is that they’re excited to become their own bosses. Read more to learn about how barbering empowers people professionally.

They Set Their Own Hours

When you’re your own boss, you decide when you work. It’s not up to someone else. Do you want weekends off? It’s your choice!

Barbers also understand that they need to work enough hours to make a living. However, if they’d rather work in the evenings or in the mornings, they have the freedom to make that decision.

They Set Their Prices

As their own bosses, barbers control pricing decisions. If they believe their services are worth more, that’s how much they’ll charge.

Barbers can also decide when to offer promotions or discounts on their services. Those deals can attract customers.

They Decide Where to Work

When you’re a barber, the world is your oyster. You’re not limited to one particular geographic location. Barbering is a highly transferable skill.

Men and women need barbers, so anywhere you go, you’ll have customers. And if you provide excellent customer service and are good at being a barber, your reputation will precede you.

They Decide What to Wear

The only real required part of a barber’s uniform is his or her jacket or smock. However, they have the freedom to choose what kind of jacket they want to wear.

Barbers can also wear whatever they like under the jacket, so they tend to wear comfortable clothes. Also, they go for comfy footwear, because they do a lot of standing.

They Choose Their Equipment

Is there a brand of shaving cream which makes you sneeze? Perhaps you prefer a particular variety of aftershave.

As your own boss, you make those choices. If you’ve realized you’re getting an allergic reaction to a particular product, you can replace it with something else comparable. It’s your business, and it’s up to you.
