Cosmetology Student Success Story: Mayra Ortiz

About Mayra Ortiz

For some, they have no idea what career path they want to take, but as for others, they just know. That was the case for Ms. Mayra, “I chose a career in the beauty industry because I’ve always had a passion for making people happy and being able to make them feel better about themselves. I also love that you are constantly learning something new everyday as the industry is always changing.” Mayra states. Self love is so important, and this industry helps us connect the dots to the importance of seeing the beauty we each have. Have you ever had a professional hair appointment, and you left feeling content in your natural beauty? That someone was able to enhance characteristics you may have struggled to see before walking in. There’s no feeling better than connecting with your client in this way, and truly making their day or view on themselves a little kinder, and Mayra is getting to live that feeling with each client as she continues to build her skills.

 The Evergreen Experience

We are recognizing Ms. Mayra for her achievements in self marketing while working towards her Cosmetology license. Mayra is making her way through her program, and has had the opportunity to perform a rounded set of services both on her guests and on her mannequins. With the building of her skill and confidence Mayra shares, “I enjoy everything so far in school: colors, haircuts, waxing, and chemical services in general. I can honestly say that I especially enjoy it when I see a happy client after their services are completed. I love it all, and want my strengths to lie in every facet of what Cosmetology has to offer.” As shared before, this industry, especially Cosmetology has so much to offer, and is forever growing and changing. Mayra is keeping her skills open and broad so she can soak in as much information and knowledge as possible.

Aside from the time she spends with her guests, the aspects of her schooling that Ms. Mayra has found to be the most helpful has been our instructor demonstrations, “Demonstrations have helped me a lot because I am more of a visual and hands on learner. Being able to see a demo, ask questions in the moment and then recreate what I’ve learned on a client or mannequin myself has truly helped me get a better understanding of what it is I am learning.”

When asked to ponder why she chose to pursue her dreams with Evergreen, Ms. Mayra shares that besides the fast commute to our Yakima campus that overall it was because it’s pretty close to home,  “I chose Evergreen Beauty College because I enjoy being around people that have the same passion as me and all the hands on the program offers.”

 

The Next Step

As brows frame the face, Ms. Mayra performs a classic brow clean up on a client at our Yakima location.

Looking ahead Ms. Mayra would like to start out in a salon where she can rent out a chair and build up her cliental. Once she has her clientele built up with some more experience in a salon setting, Mayra would like to venture off on her own. “I want to start my own business someday,” Mayra added. Our students are taking the steps to be successful in their approach of their long term goals. Part of owning a business and building a loyal clientele is curating a brand that keeps people coming back. Ms. Mayra feels her personal touch and listening to what the client wants is very important. “I will listen to what it is that you are trying to achieve and be sure to express it back to you. I want to make sure we both are on the same page, that way I can get you the look that you are desiring.”  Mayra also adds, “I am also very outgoing and love hyping up my client once the service is done. I want my client to feel more confident leaving my chair than when they came in.”

For future students Ms. Mayra has a simple but great piece of advice, ” Be prepared and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Always stay positive and most importantly, have fun!”
