Hair Design Student Success Story: Gwenyth Landes

About Gwenyth Landes

Gwenyth Landes, a Hair Design student at our Renton Campus working in action on her client.

Gwenyth has worked off and on in the veterinary field and animal rescue for 18 years, which she has found to be incredibly rewarding. However, it was never her intention to create a career in that field. The effect of Covid 19 on that industry has been substantial and overwhelmingly challenging, and it forced her to really step back and prioritize her true passions and overall happiness. This is what led Gwenyth to getting her Hair Design license at Evergreen Beauty College.

When we asked Gwenyth why she chose the Hair Design program, this is what she shared: “The Hair Design program was especially appealing to me, as my main focus is hair – specifically cutting, styling, and barbering. Learning about hair color is an added bonus that allows me to be as marketable as possible and creates more variety in opportunities I will have upon graduation. I will not be pursuing nails or esthetics within a professional capacity, so I was excited to find that Evergreen offers a program without them.” Gwenyth chose Evergreen Beauty College because we offer the Hair Design program, which was most appealing to her, along with an enriching and supportive environment that made her feel she would be cared for as an individual.

The Evergreen Experience

Since starting the Hair Design program with us Gwenyth Lanes has shared some of her highlights of what she has enjoyed, what has helped her so far, and what sets her apart from other Hair Designers: “My favorite part of the program is any time I get to cut! Also, learning new techniques and having the ability to test them out, be it on a mannequin, client, or classmate.” When asked about her favorite assignments and projects she’s done while in school, and she expressed: “Any assignment that encourages the students to express creativity and uniqueness is something I love. The winter wonderland photo shoot is a fantastic example of how valuable it is to give students the opportunity to conceptualize and execute an entire look – hair, makeup, wardrobe, presentation, creating an impactful image that can contribute to a portfolio…I loved it!!”

While in school, Gwenyth has discovered that working with layers and creating texture within a style is a strength of hers, as well as doing deconstructed styles, modern twists on classics, and working with the hair and not against it. She enjoys helping whoever sits in her chair feel they are expressing themselves authentically. Gwenyth shared that the way her clients feel is the most important thing to her and creating a genuine connection with them in whatever way, big or small, is part of what brings her joy in this field.  Working with someone’s individuality and enhancing natural beauty is always her goal and supporting their choices and helping them to express themselves is an honor for her.

The Next Step

Gwenyth created this stunning editorial look for the winter wonderland photoshoot.

When asked about her plans after graduation, Gwenyth said, “My overall goal is to work for myself. Setting my own schedule, practicing the parts of this craft that are most fulfilling to me, and having the flexibility to work in any environment. Being in a salon or barbershop is as exciting to me as being a traveling stylist and going to people’s homes or events.”

Gwenyth expressed her advice to incoming students: “My advice to students starting their beauty school journey is to be open to the different opportunities offered to you! It’s wonderful to have a clear idea of what you want but trying new things and getting out of your comfort zone can lead to surprising avenues you might not expect. You might find that editorial is what excites you, or color corrections are your gift, or perhaps you find a niche working with children, etc. You don’t always know until you try, and Evergreen does a great job of giving their students the chance to explore lots of options, so take those opportunities while you can!”

Gwenyth Landes is set to graduate in July 2022. If you would like to follow her through the rest of her journey, you can find her on Instagram: @gwenythbeautybarber. Congratulations Gwenyth! Evergreen Beauty College looks forward to seeing accomplish your dreams!
