Master Esthetics Student Success Story: Emily Hummel
About Emily Hummel
Growing up, and finding your path in the world is a forever evolving task. Our minds and sometimes hearts are pushed, and pulled in many directions until finally one day one of those tugs places meaningful roots. Ms. Emily Hummel, one of our current Master Esthetics students shared an example of that search she sought for herself, “Before I was enrolled at Evergreen Beauty College I was working as a barista Monday through Friday while also going to Skagit Valley College. Originally, I was planning to become a Forensic Technician. After realizing that was not the right job for me, I changed my degree path from Biology to an Associates in Arts. After that, I spent a few months working towards my Associates in Arts degree when I realized I wanted to become an Esthetician.”
A common consensus in our interviews over the years have shown that the individuals in our beauty industry share a similar ‘Why’ for getting started in the world of beauty and wellness. “Struggling myself with acne as a teen is the main reason I chose the Master Esthetics program. Growing up, I went to different doctors and dermatologists who all put me on different medications and topical treatments that just seemed to be very harsh on my skin. As I have gotten older, I have realized that proper skincare and good habits can help lead you to the skin you want. When my skin looks good, I feel a lot more confident, and I believe most people feel the same way. This is why I decided to start the process of becoming a Licensed Master Esthetician. I want to educate people about their skin and how they can reach their personal skin goals, while at the same time helping people to feel good about themselves by enhancing their natural beauty. Another thing I love about this industry is that things will always be changing and there will always be new technologies and new advancements added on to the technology we already have. This means skin care and the tools we can use can only keep getting better from here moving forward,” Ms. Emily explains.
One of the areas the Trieu family, and the staff at Evergreen focuses on is the success of their students. Here, we know that changing the industry doesn’t happen by chance so it was refreshing to hear Ms. Emily’s reasons for choosing Evergreen as her school because it shows us that we are on the right path. “I personally chose EBC for several reasons. One reason was because I have heard only good things about the college. I liked that the Everett campus has the lasers onsite that we get trained on throughout the program, unlike other colleges that would have to travel to another location to practice lasers. I also like the volunteer opportunities EBC has offered in the past, although we were unable to do them this past year due to COVID, but the gesture speaks volumes. Evergreen also has an externship program which is another remarkable thing that drew me to the college when I was doing research on different schools. It has also been shared from different sources that when looking for a job a lot of places like to hear that you have graduated from Evergreen Beauty College.“ expresses Emily.
The Evergreen Experience
Since starting the Esthetics program with us Ms. Emily has shared some of her highlights of what she has enjoyed, what has helped her so far, and what sets her apart from other skin therapist:
“What I like most about my program is that there is so much to learn. Honestly. I love science, and there is so much more to skin care than just picking products that have nice packaging. There are also so many different tools that can help improve the skin’s appearance. One tool I have used at school that I have seen amazing results with is the high frequency machine. This treatment is a non-invasive approach to skin rejuvenation utilizing electrical current. It can dramatically reduce inflammation and acne within 24 hours.”
“At school, the most helpful thing for me personally has been either watching demonstrations or getting to do hands on work, as that it just my learning style. It’s great getting to watch a demonstration, then turning around and getting to actually practice it on our classmates. I know personally, this was also part of why I chose to enroll into EBC. Knowing ahead of time that I do my best understanding of what’s being taught when I am learning by actually doing things, rather than only reading from a textbook was crucial when deciding to move in this direction. “
“So far within my program I have begun to specialize in facials. Although I do enjoy waxing, IPL which is intense pulsed light that’s used to treat pigmentation conditions, and Laser Hair Removal, but I truly believe performing facials is what I am meant to be doing. Facials are not a one size fits all treatment and can be for anyone. I enjoy getting to customize each and every treatment depending on the client’s needs. Whatever the service I am doing though, I can share that I am very dedicated to my work. I constantly am using my time to learn more about ingredients, products, massage techniques, tools, and more, so that I can make the most out of my client’s time. Although, I do not know as much as I want to yet, it is something I am working on and that I believe sets me apart from others in my field.”
The Next Step
Ms. Emily is working towards the last segment in school and will be hitting Phase 3, the last class prior to completing her program, here soon. Already thinking ahead strategically of life after school, Ms. Emily shares with us just what that will look like, “After I graduate, I hope to start my own small business somewhere local. I live in a very small town where the closest spa is at least 15 minutes away, and I think it would be a wonderful opportunity for me. Eventually, I would love to start my own skincare line. If all goes well, I would like to either hire a few more Estheticians to work alongside me at my own spa or transition I into work with a physician at a Medical Spa.”
We always love hearing from our students, and asking for them to share words of wisdom for the incoming students. It’s one thing to give advice from an educator or staff member but I do believe that coming from a peer is so crucial. Ms. Emily shares, “The advice I have for incoming students is to invest as much time as you can into learning. I spend a lot of time outside of class researching brands, watching videos from Licensed Estheticians, studying from our curriculum, reading books about ingredients, and much more. You can never spend too much time learning, and there will always be something new to learn about in your area of specialty.” Well shared Emily. We couldn’t agree with you more, and love hearing that passion you have.
Ms. Emily is set to graduate this June, 2021. And if you are interested in following Emily throughout the rest of her program, you can check her out on Instagram: @emilymasteresthetics.
