Do You Have What it Takes to Become a Make-up Artist?

Being a part of Hollywood doesn’t mean that you have to get into acting. You can take part behind the scenes with an exciting career as a make-up artist.

Get a Make-Up Education

There’s more to being a make-up artist than learning how to accentuate the features and do make-up for an evening out. Rather than doing everyday make-up, a Hollywood makeup artist is going to learn the skills to create things like aliens and monsters. Through a makeup artist program, you’re going to be able to learn the skills to get into the business.

Develop Your Portfolio

Just as actors require a portfolio to get work, a make-up artist should develop a set of images that display the skills and experience. In many cases, a portfolio is even needed for students trying to make their way into the make-up artist program as some take only a handful of students every year.

Get an Internship

An internship is going to give you the on-set experience needed to get your foot in the door. It’s not likely that you’re going to get paid for the job, but the experience is going to be essential. You’ll get to work with experts, get real training and establish connections to use in the future. After you’ve gone through the education, experience and working as an intern to develop the contacts, you’re ready to find your own jobs in Hollywood. What types of duties are required as a make-up artist?

Working with the Screenwriter to bring the concept to life; reading through the script to find and interpret the details that are going to create the appearance.

Creating new effects and staying on top of the trends is essential; you’re going to have to attend trade shows and read publications to stay up to date. In some cases, you might even be required to create new blends of make-up.

Managing a team is one of the duties of being the lead make-up artist.  The head make-up artist is going to assign jobs and ensure that the tasks are being completed, and being completed correctly. Developing relationships with the actors on set is an essential part of the job. Actors are going to spend hours in the chair of the make-up artist and it’s important to develop a rapport with them.

Taking inventory of the supplies is an important part of the job. You’re going to need to assess how much make-up is going to be required through the production and order the make-up as necessary, ensuring that you don’t run out of supplies. How much can you expect to earn as a make-up artist? Beginning salary of the artist is between $30,000 to $50,000 per year. With experience comes an increase in wage.
