It is Time to Rediscover the Art of Barbering

the art of barberingAlthough it is sometimes seen as old-fashioned, the barbershop and the art of barbering will not be going away anytime soon. Despite the rise of unisex salons, lots of men still like to visit the barber. Why? Part of it is the manly ritual of getting a shave and a haircut. Part of it is knowing that an expert is on the job of making you look, smell, and feel your best.

Barber Shops vs. Unisex Salons

Many men these days get their hair cut at unisex salons because they are cheap and convenient. The problem is that the stylists there don’t really know how to cut men’s hair. For one thing, cosmetologists are trained to use scissors and to treat women’s hair. A barber’s tool is clippers, and he can handle them with finesse. A barber knows how to cut sideburns, thinning hair, apply fades, and other techniques specific to men. Moreover, a client at a barbershop comes away looking and smelling like a man, not like a man who just got his hair cut at a beauty salon.

Modern Art of Barbering

One of the simplest and yet most important skills for the barber is edging a man’s hair. Unlike women, who’s long hair styles require different skill sets, a man’s hair is defined by the hairline. A good barber will create smooth attractive lines around a man’s ears, mouth, and forehead. Even from a distance, this small touch creates a much cleaner look so that you can almost always tell when a man has had his hair cut by a barber as opposed to a hair dresser.

Men Deserve Special Attention Too

While salons that pamper women have sprung up in great numbers around the country, the same is not true for men. Instead, there is a prevailing philosophy that men should be satisfied with an electric razor and a hot shower. At the barbershop, however, the barber holds trade secrets that make men feel more manly and ready to face the world. Anyone who has experienced a close shave with a straight razor, complete with face rub and hot towels can appreciate that men deserve some personal attention, too. This is not some flighty new age treatment, but an ancient art that men have enjoyed through the centuries.

Passing The Art of Barbering From Generation to Generation

While it may seem old fashioned, barbers aren’t going anywhere. In fact, a new generation of barbers has picked up the clippers where their elders have left off. It is now common in many cities to find barber shops that have embraced the elegance, wood and leather of years past while adding modern touches that speak to today’s clients. There will always be a demand for good barbers, and indeed this is a beloved American tradition that men everywhere still appreciate.

It’s awesome that you talked about how men also deserve specialized attention when it comes to getting a new haircut. The other day my wife and I visited the mall, and I saw an ad about a barbershop. It got me thinking about how I’ve never visited one before, so I want to get a special retreat for my dad and brother and get us a day at a barbershop. I really enjoyed reading your article about the benefits of going to a barbershop. renegadebarbers.com/

I like how you said that a barbershop makes you look and feel your best. My husband wants to get his hair cut soon. I will suggest that he find a great barbershop to go to. https://www.freshkutz.com/
