Where You Will Find Your First Cosmetology Job

cosmetologySometimes it’s easy to forget that you will need to do more work when you finish school just to find work, but we’ve got your back. Here is how you’ll be able to land your first job in cosmetology.

School Job Placement Services

Of the 70 cosmetology schools the Beauty Schools Directory surveyed they found that, “92.6% of them offer some type of career placement services,” and that, “some schools even have a job placement coach at their school to help counsel you on careers, interviewing, networking, job fairs, and more.” This is good news for current or recently graduated students. Check in with your school to make sure that they offer this type of service, and take advantage of every opportunity they provide to look for work — the sooner, the better.

Reach Out to Your Network of Peers and Mentors

Another way to find your first job in cosmetology is to reach out to both your personal and professional networks and leverage their experience and connections. Start by asking teachers and classmates about their connections and if they know of anyone hiring. It is also helpful to ask friends and family about the spas that they visit. These can be good leads for places to contact and inquire about any job openings. Even if the salons are not hiring, they’ll know about you and if they’re impressed, they will keep you in mind for future openings.

Make a Portfolio of Your Work and Make It Widely Available

Technology has offered a huge advantage to those working in cosmetology. Get some pictures and video of your work in action and create an online portfolio, which you can send out to prospective employers. You can build a client following by offering tutorials on Pinterest, YouTube, or Instagram, which also builds your visibility to employers.

Look at Job Boards — Online, in Print, and in Person

There are job boards specifically for work in cosmetology, and there are also the common job boards like Indeed.com or Monster.com, which you can look at and apply for jobs directly. It’s a good idea to search your local classifieds and see who might be hiring in your area.

Finally, nothing beats pounding the pavement and walking directly into spas where you’d like to work. This gives you a chance to meet the manager and/or owner in person so you can leave a lasting impression on them!

Finding the Right Job Requires the Right Training

Without the right training, finding a job will prove to be a difficult task. At Evergreen Beauty College, you get hands-on training from staff members who work in the industry, as well as practical experience in our salon. Upon graduation, you’ll be ready to venture into the beauty industry.
