Why Make up Artists are Artists AND Scientists

Why Make up Artists are Artists AND ScientistsWorking in the world of makeup artistry is fascinating. As a makeup artist you can work anywhere from the MAC counter to the biggest movie sets in Hollywood.

With the makeup brush you wield, you can expertly make someone look older, or younger, you can make them prettier or uglier – it all depends on what the client is looking for, for that particular project.

As a makeup artist you really are an artist, creating multiple works each day – now lets see if DaVinci could do that! But even with all of this skill in the arts, it might be easy to forget the fact that makeup artists are also scientists! Here are the types of scientific skills you acquire when you become a makeup artist.

Cosmetic Chemist

When you spend all day mixing various pigments to match or compliment a client’s skin tone, you are in essence working a bit of your chemistry muscles with the cosmetics that you use.

While you may not be creating the organic compounds that make up different cosmetics, you will still need to understand the product’s origins, so that you are able to expertly mix them together to suit your clients the best.

Dermatologist

While you’re stretching your skill in the chemistry of the cosmetic products that you are using, you are also working as a dermatologist. By understanding whether a product is organic or inorganic, you can assess which products will work well with, or negatively impact the unique skin of your client.

By assessing your client’s personal needs, you can identify if they have sensitive or oily skin, and based on that will be able to use the right products to hide, or in some cases improve the condition of the skin.

Psychologist

Hmm… psychologist. Really? Yep! Since an excellent makeup artist is able to transform his or her client into whatever the client desires with the right application or the right products, the makeup artist can work a sort of psychological effect on both the client and those surrounding them.

With a successful transformation of a client who has severe acne, for example, the client will feel like they are indeed beautiful and worthy of success. Or, perhaps you’ve got a celebrity who wants to go undercover for a little prank, like this video of singer, Jewel, who underwent extensive makeup artistry to disguise herself as a regular office worker out for a night of karaoke with her coworkers just to see how people will react.

No matter the situation, as a makeup artist you have the distinct ability to shape the way that people view your clients in both their personal and professional lives with your skills in both art and science.
