5 Must Know Tips for Writing an Entry Level Cosmetology Resume

Your entry level cosmetology resume can make a huge difference in whether or not you get a job. Below are five great tips for making sure that your resume stands out from the crowd.

Avoid Spelling Mistakes

This skill should be a given, but it bears mentioning. You must always double-check your resume and make sure that everything is spelled correctly. Cosmetology may be a creative career, but your boss needs to know that you care enough to look over your own resume carefully. Doing so tells the person doing the hiring that you will take the job seriously.

Go Into Detail

Detail is key when it comes to a resume. Make sure that you actually list what you have done in a job or in school so that your employer knows that you have real skills. If you have managed people in a position, put down that skill. If you know a particular beauty technique, let the employer know that you have used it in class or in the real world. The more information that is available, the better the employer can get to know you.

Emphasize Your Experience

If you have real-world experience, be it working in a salon or as an intern, you need to make sure that it is listed on your resume. While your education is very important, nothing beats experience in the real world. Never short-change yourself or ignore a job. Even spending time in a salon sweeping up hair will show that you know something about how the business works and that you are willing to do anything to succeed in the business.

Education

Cosmetology schooling is a little different than other types of schooling. While your resume absolutely needs to include the cosmetology school that you attended, you might have had other training that needs to be included. If you took any type of single-session class to learn how to accomplish a specific task, make sure that you list it on your resume. Employers want to know what skills you have, and this is a great place to show what you can do.

Be Creative With Your resume

Cosmetology is a creative field, and you are certainly allowed a bit more leeway to be creative with a resume for a cosmetology job than you would for a different position. Feel free to use colorful paper or interesting fonts – but never use anything that will interfere with the reader’s ability to decipher what is written. Make sure that your personality stands out when you hand in your resume, but do not overwhelm your potential boss with your choices.

If you want to succeed, you need to start by making a good first impression. Your entry level cosmetology resume can help you do that before you ever meet with an employer.
