A Look at Beauty Education Jobs

Beauty education jobs are a logical next step for many licensed cosmetologists who want to share their knowledge with others interested in the industry. Instructor programs at cosmetology schools like Evergreen Beauty College prepare these professionals to teach beginner beauty school students, those who are learning specialized techniques or classes offered as continuing education for licensed stylists.

Beauty Education Jobs

Those who complete cosmetology instructor programs have a wide range of job opportunities. Some instructors teach at dedicated beauty colleges, while other are employed by community colleges or technical schools. Some teach new students, while others focus only on teaching continuing education classes.

Many teach only part time, maintaining their own clients in their own salons during the hours they are not teaching. This is especially true of instructors who teach only specific methods and techniques, instead of being general instructors.

If there is a specialization of cosmetology that you have mastered in your years of practice, that skill might be something that you would want to pass on to the next generation of stylists. Courses commonly taught by specialists include coloring and specific cutting and finishing techniques.

Training as an Instructor

Most instructors are state-licensed cosmetologists who have experience working with many clients in the field. Some instructor candidates only hold a certificate or degree and license from a specialty field, like nails or esthetics. In this case, they may only wish to teach in their specialized field. Most instructor training programs, however, are set up for those who already have a mastery of a wide-variety of cosmetology techniques. This is because most states require instructors to be able to perform and teach each of the skills tested on the state licensing exam for a cosmetologist. This means they have to know a wide range of cosmetology skills, even if they are outside of the specialty they will be teaching.

Much of the coursework in an instructor training program will focus on skills unique to instructors. This includes teaching methods, student supervision, safety practices in the salon, lesson planning and communication skills. These topics are also included in the instructor licensing exam in many states.

Beauty Education Job Outlook

The cosmetology industry is growing, meaning there is a growing need for qualified instructors as well. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the field is growing at the same average rate as all other occupations. This means it is expected to grow about 16 percent before 2020. There may be job openings at beauty colleges, cosmetology schools and specialty institutes across the country. Some may be  full time positions, and others may be part time. A part time position would allow you to continue working in your salon, with your clients, while you pass your knowledge and experience on to students learning about the industry.
