Diary of a Nail Tech Student

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Inspiration Picture

The current Nail Technician class at Evergreen Beauty College is holding a nail competition that has me and my fellow classmates taking pictures we find for inspiration of whatever we would like, whether it be other nail art, fashion, or the “feel” of a picture that inspires us to create nail art from that photo.

I personally decided to take a photo I found and have the “feel” of the photo inspire the nails I created which are hand made press-on gel form nails.

I found this photo of the girl in red holding a knife over her eye on an Instagram board that was photographed by Isolde Woudstra. I really loved the composition and the simplicity of the photo. I then noticed her fantastic red slacks and matching blazer followed by a not so everyday accessory… a knife. Now take the way she is holding the knife, she is holding the knife in a non- violent way over her eye, partially covering her face. This shows and gives me the feeling she has had heartache and has walls built around her to protect herself but this girl also wants you to know that she is a confident woman and not a person to mess with in that fierce red pantsuit.

Overall the nails I created (RED) were made from hard gel that was shaped in what is called a “coffin” shape. Once I created my form foundations to make the press-on nails, I polished then hand painted each finger with the middle finger being 3D acrylic nail art which I used mixed media with acrylic Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetpaint and metallic watercolors for shading.  Each finger represents something a little different that relates and translates over from the photo used for inspiration.

The thumb is a solid simple red by OPI that ties it in with the other fingers, her foundation. The pointer finger represents her fabulous suit and emotional walls, her armor. The middle finger with 3D nail art represents cartilage, scarring and also matches the brick wall in the inspiration photo, her scars. The ring finger represents the broken heart, her hurt. The pinky finger baring the red cross represents time and processing, her healing.

As nails techs we usually have monthly competitions with each other that are always a good time and you get to see and learn what others are doing in your program. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did creating it!
