Effective Nail Care Tips for Healthy Nails

Effective Nail Care TipsNail care tips can help you keep your nails healthy and in great condition.  In this fast paced, yet beauty focused world, many women neglect their fingernails and may not have time to visit a nail salon.  Even though some may consider them a minor detail of our beauty regime, they are easily noticed. Depending on your career and your habits, sometimes your fingernails are more noticed than one would think.

Tips for Nail Care

Check out our nail care tips to help keep your nails looking healthy and beautiful:

Shorter Is Healthier

Long nails seem to be in style a lot.  Women go to great lengths to have long natural nails or use fake nails.  However, shorter nails are healthier nails.  Keep your fingernails short in order to avoid nails that spilt, break, or otherwise become damaged.  Shorter nails are also easier to maintain.

Moisturize

Use moisturizer not only on your hands and fingers, but also on your cuticles and nails.  When putting lotion on your hands, remember to rub it into your nails and cuticle beds.  Do this several times per day and before bed.  You can sleep with cotton gloves on to help lock the moisture into the skin, nails, and cuticles.  It is also important to note that you do not need to do anything additional for cuticle care.  Cutting or trimming the cuticles can cause bleeding and potential infections.  Simply keep them well-moisturized and do not bite them.

Use Clear Polish

This may surprise some, but using a clear nail polish can keep your nails healthier.  Apply a thin coat of clear polish twice per week.  This will keep moisture in the fingernails.

Consider Biotin

It is generally a myth that eating certain healthy foods or taking vitamins will improve the health or strength of your nails.  However, the supplement Biotin has been shown in some research studies to help strengthen fingernails.  Talk to your doctor about talking biotin supplements.

A Note About Polish Remover

Though using clear polish can help keep nails healthier, using too much polish remover can have an opposite effect.  Most polish removers contain acetone which dries nails.  Limit the use of acetone-based polish removers, or choose an acetone-free polish remover to help prevent your nails from drying out.
