What Are Esthetician Requirements?

An esthetician is a professional who is trained to administer a variety of skin care treatments, including facials, hair removal services, chemical peels and massages.

Important Esthetician Requirements

In order to work as an esthetician, you must complete certain requirements. Below are the key esthetician requirements:

Formal Training

The first step in becoming an esthetician is to complete formal training in cosmetology. The hours of training that you are required to complete can vary, depending on the state that you reside. However, the most states require that you complete at least 600 hours of training.

Your training will consist of classroom and practical instruction. You will learn about waxing, skin diseases, makeup application, chemical treatments and facials. You will also spend a lot of time practicing the skills that you learn.

You want to make sure that you choose an accredited school.  If you graduate from a school that is not accredited, then you will not be eligible to take the state exam. It is important to note that almost all esthetician programs require that you have at least a high school diploma or GED.

Get Licensed

After you graduate from an accredited cosmetology program, you will need to apply for your license. You will need to pass a written and practical examination before you get your license.

Take Continuing Education Courses

You may want to consider taking continuing education courses after you complete all of the other esthetician requirements. It will be a-lot easier for you to move up in your career if you take continuing education courses. Lymphatic massage and  spray tanning are some of the things that may be covered in a continuing education class. Keep in mind that you can complete continuing education courses by attending conferences and workshops.
