What’s Hot: Fun and Fresh Short Hair Styles

Fun and fresh short hair styles have continued to be the true head-turners for everyone who dares to take the plunge into the shorter world.  Whether it’s for a change in seasons or for a desire for an easier, more manageable hairdo, a shorter hair style can be the main component of the “new you”.

The Short, Shaggy Bob

Whether it’s on the red carpet in Hollywood or in the Board Room at work, there are certain styles that are always timeless, appropriate, and fun.  Although it does take the skill of a great hairdresser to achieve the cut, the shaggy bob is the perfect combination of looking effortless and casual while at the same time being sophisticated and sexy.  Whether your bob is naturally curly or straighter, the look is undeniably complimentary to all hair types and faces.

Here’s how to do it:

Be sure to get a great asymmetrical cut. After your cut, you’ll need a thorough shampooing and conditioning.  Don’t skip the conditioning step, as it softens your hair and makes the most out of styling products.

Next, you’ll need to part your hair and be sure to use a great mousse (alcohol free so it won’t dry out your hair).  This will help to add shape and body to your hair during the blow-drying process.  For best results, use a hard bristle hair brush. When blow drying your hair, make sure you dry the underside of your hair for maximum body.

The Short, Curly Style

If you have fine hair, any cut that gives your hair more volume is a plus.  Your stylist can help you to achieve this look with a precision razor layered cut.  (This look is definitely one that should be achieved by a professional.)  After the cut, your hair should be misted with either a spray gel or holding mousse and blow-dried while holding your head forward.  To get the maximum out of your curls, ask your stylist to use a wax or cream to separate your ends to achieve the much-desired tousled, yet polished look.

Short Hair Styles for African American/Ethnic Hair

Because African Americans and many other ethnicities tend to have thicker, coarser, curlier hair, you will want to pick a stylist with a strong background and skill set in this area.  Once you’ve done that, achieving a great short style that is easy to maintain is within your reach.  Key things to remember include:

  • After washing, use a premium leave-in conditioner to maintain moisture and protect while blow-drying.
  • While blow-drying, work the hair down towards the face to guide the hair to the desired angle.
  • Use a flat iron to remove any remaining frizz and to achieve an accurate precision cut.
  • Finally, use a finishing spray to achieve a great shine.
